Apple TV Purchased Shows Now Upgrade to 4K at No Extra Cost — Apple TV

What You Need to Know

  • Apple automatically upgrading purchased TV shows to 4K in Apple TV app at no extra cost.
  • Movie purchases received 4K upgrades starting in 2017; TV shows now finally included in program.
  • Current 4K upgrades limited to SDR only; HDR support not yet available in first wave.
  • Apple has not published official list or timeline; rollout currently uneven across user accounts.

Apple is quietly extending a benefit to TV show buyers that movie purchasers have had for years. Purchased TV shows are beginning to appear in 4K in users’ libraries inside the Apple TV app, at no additional cost.

The movie version of this perk dates to 2017, when Apple launched the first Apple TV 4K and began upgrading eligible film purchases automatically. TV shows were left out of that arrangement, and have stayed out until now. The rollout was spotted by Sigmund Judge, who shared an early list of titles now showing up in 4K for some users.

The shows currently confirmed to be receiving upgrades include:

  • Mad Men
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
  • RuPaul’s Drag Race UK
  • Q: Into the Storm
  • The Twilight Zone
  • The Wingfeather Saga
  • Aftertaste

One detail worth keeping in mind: the upgrades are currently SDR only. Users get a sharper 4K picture, but HDR support is not part of this first wave, which limits how much the visual improvement actually registers on a capable display.

A Library Worth Checking

Apple has not published an official list or timeline, and the rollout is uneven enough that the same title may appear upgraded for one user and not another. If you’ve been tracking purchases you want to revisit, opening your library in the Apple TV app is the simplest way to check. The eligible list is expected to grow, though Apple has offered no specifics on pace or scope.

The timing is interesting given that Apple has been building its originals slate aggressively and pushing the TV app as a central hub for all video content. Improving the back catalog experience for buyers, even gradually, fits that strategy without requiring any public announcement or price change.
