IOS 27 Camera App Now Shows Hidden Portrait Mode by Default

Apple quietly fixed one of the Camera app’s more frustrating habits in iOS 27: hiding modes that users had no obvious reason to know existed. In iOS 26, switching to certain shooting modes collapsed the visible option strip down to just two choices, making Portrait mode easy to overlook entirely.

iOS 27 expands that strip to show three modes and adds a visual indicator that more options exist beyond what’s immediately visible. That second part matters more than the count. An affordance that signals “there’s more here” changes user behavior in a way that simply adding one more icon does not.

Portrait mode, which blurs the background while keeping the subject sharp, has been a headline iPhone feature for years. Hiding it behind an interface that gave no hint of its existence was a strange way to treat one of Apple’s most-marketed camera capabilities.

A Larger Shift Underneath

The UI fix lands alongside more structural changes to the Camera app in iOS 27. Apple is folding Siri directly into the Camera as a dedicated shooting mode, treating visual lookup as a first-class option rather than a feature you invoke separately. That move is part of a broader repositioning of the iPhone camera as a visual AI interface, not just a photography tool.

The Visual Intelligence expansion in iOS 27 adds real weight to what would otherwise be a minor housekeeping update. Apple is not just cleaning up the mode selector because it looked cluttered. It is preparing the Camera app to surface more modes to more users, including ones powered by on-device AI that did not exist two years ago.

A tidier mode strip is the kind of change that gets buried in release notes. But the timing, right as the Camera app gains its most significant functional additions in years, suggests Apple wanted the interface to stop working against itself before the new features arrived.
