WhatsApp Usernames Let You Message Without Sharing Phone Numbers

WhatsApp has started letting users reserve usernames ahead of a broader rollout that will let people message each other without sharing phone numbers. The feature is arriving gradually, with the app sending a notification when a reservation slot becomes available to a given account.

The shift matters because WhatsApp has always tied identity to a phone number, meaning any conversation with a stranger or a business exposed that number by default. Once usernames go live, an account with one set will no longer reveal a phone number when messaging someone for the first time. That is a meaningful privacy change for a platform with over three billion users.

Usernames run between 3 and 35 characters. There is no public directory and no discovery feature, so someone has to know your exact username to reach you. WhatsApp also has an optional username key that adds spam protection on top of that, giving users a second layer of control over who can contact them.

For Creators and Businesses

Meta is using the rollout to pull its platforms closer together. Creators, small businesses, and organizations can claim their existing Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp, as long as no one else has already taken it. That cross-platform claim option is available directly in settings, and it gives established accounts a clear advantage in the early reservation window.

WhatsApp says it opened reservations early specifically so that everyone has a fair chance at a username that matters to them. Usernames are optional throughout, selected under Settings, then Account, then Username. The full feature is expected to roll out over the next few months, at which point the username system becomes active rather than just reserved.
