IPhone Foldable Production Target Jumps to 10 Million Units — iPhone

What You Need to Know

  • Apple’s foldable iPhone production forecast increased to 10 million units from 7-8 million.
  • Foldable iPhone launching September 2026 with iPhone 18 Pro lineup in two colors.
  • Hinge engineering problems resolved, but initial shipment expected to be constrained.
  • Foldable iPhone features 7.8-inch inner display, 5.5-inch cover display, and Touch ID.

Apple’s production forecast for its first foldable iPhone has climbed to roughly 10 million units, up from an earlier target of 7 to 8 million set just a few months ago. That revision, reported by Nikkei Asia, reflects a broader supply chain push: Apple has already booked parts for around 80 million smartphones for the second half of 2026, covering the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable. Full-year production is expected to exceed 220 million units.

The bump in foldable targets comes despite the device only being expected in two colors at launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in September. Earlier uncertainty about that timeline has largely faded, with recent supply chain signals pointing toward a standard fall release rather than a delayed or staggered rollout.

Engineering problems with the hinge have reportedly been resolved, though that fix carries an ironic side effect: it raises the likelihood of a constrained initial shipment, with a larger production run not expected until late in the year. Consumers planning to buy one at launch should probably temper expectations about availability.

The rumored spec sheet for the device is taking shape:

  • 7.8-inch inner display and 5.5-inch cover display
  • Touch ID rather than Face ID
  • A20 chip and Apple’s C2 modem

Pricing pressure building across the lineup

Apple raised prices on MacBooks and iPads last month in response to rising component costs, while the iPhone 17 lineup has so far avoided increases. The iPhone 18 Pro and its siblings are widely expected to be the moment Apple resets iPhone pricing more broadly, and a full 2026 product slate that includes a premium foldable gives the company a natural opening to do exactly that.

Apple’s purchasing scale is also working in its favor competitively. Rivals including Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have each cut annual production targets below 100 million units amid an industry-wide memory shortage, while Apple’s supply commitments have reportedly kept it better positioned for allocations.
