A leaker known as “Kosutami” has claimed that Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods Pro project has been “suspended,” with no explanation offered beyond that single word posted on X. The timing is striking because Bloomberg reported as recently as May that the product had reached an “advanced” testing stage and that early mass production could be imminent.
The cameras under development are not for photography. They are infrared sensors designed to feed visual information about the wearer’s surroundings into Siri, connecting the hardware directly to Apple Intelligence features that have been in development alongside the product. Kosutami first described this use case in February, and other sources have since corroborated it.
Apple had reportedly been targeting a first-half 2026 launch, though that timeline was already slipping because the smarter, AI-driven version of Siri remains unfinished. That version exists in the current iOS 27 beta but is not expected to reach general users until September. Bloomberg’s May report explicitly flagged that Apple might hold the AirPods back if it was not satisfied with the quality of those Visual Intelligence features.
Component shortages add another layer
Bloomberg also noted that Apple’s operations teams were working to secure components under difficult conditions, given an industry-wide shortage of memory chips and other silicon. Whether that supply pressure is connected to the suspension claim is unknown, and Kosutami offered nothing further. The project has reportedly been in development for around four years.
Kosutami’s track record is mixed. They correctly predicted the metal-enclosed battery in the iPhone 16 Pro roughly ten months before launch, but also incorrectly called AirPods Pro 3 as imminent back in August 2024. Given that Siri’s AI capabilities face geographic and regulatory complications across Apple’s platforms, a product whose entire purpose depends on those features working well carries obvious risk if the software side stalls.
