Anthropic is retiring its existing Claude in Slack integration on August 3, replacing it with a new tool called Claude Tag, now in beta for Enterprise and Team customers.
The core shift is less about adding Slack support and more about changing how Claude participates in team work. Rather than responding to direct messages in isolation, Claude Tag joins a workspace as a full team member, with access to selected channels, connected tools, data sources, and codebases. Team members tag @Claude in conversations to assign tasks, and the AI builds context over time by remembering relevant information from those channels.
The ambient behavior feature is where the approach gets more interesting. When enabled, Claude Tag can proactively carry out planned tasks without waiting for a user prompt, scheduling and automating work in the background while employees stay focused on other things. That moves Claude closer to a persistent background collaborator than a chatbot waiting to be asked a question.
Anthropic has been running this internally before the public launch. According to the company’s developer account, Claude Tag now writes 65 percent of the product team’s code, including most of the code that built Claude Tag itself. The Claude Code team has reportedly been shipping with it all year.
Claude Code Connection
Anthropic describes Claude Tag as the next step in the evolution of Claude Code, which positions the Slack tool as part of a broader development workflow story rather than a standalone productivity feature. That framing suggests the company sees its coding-focused AI tools and its collaboration tools as converging rather than sitting in separate categories.
The August 3 retirement date for the older Claude in Slack tool gives existing users a fixed window to migrate. The beta is available now for eligible Enterprise and Team customers.
