Foldable iPhone Hinge Still Unresolved Weeks Before 2026 Launch — iPhone

What You Need to Know

  • Apple’s foldable iPhone scheduled for September 2026 unveiling with iPhone 18 Pro models.
  • Component suppliers report small batch deliveries underway with no indication of delays.
  • Hinge durability concerns remain unresolved despite display creasing issues being largely addressed.
  • Foldable iPhone expected to feature 7.8-inch inner display, A20 chip, and $2,000 pricing.

Supply chain sources are pushing back on delay speculation around Apple’s first foldable iPhone, with component deliveries reportedly already underway in small batches. A source cited by China Securities Journal, via DigiTimes, says the device is scheduled to be unveiled in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. A second supply-chain contact confirmed it had received no indication of a delay and continues working toward a fall 2026 timetable.

The more interesting detail getting buried under the scheduling debate is the engineering picture. A leaker called Instant Digital claimed in May that hinge durability concerns remain unresolved, with the mechanism not yet meeting Apple’s long-term reliability standards, even as display creasing issues are said to be largely addressed. For a device expected to launch within months, unresolved hinge concerns at this stage would be unusual by Apple’s own standards for new product categories.

The expected spec sheet for the foldable is fairly well established at this point:

  • 7.8-inch inner display and 5.5-inch cover display
  • A20 chip and C2 modem
  • Touch ID power button in place of Face ID
  • Two rear cameras, with pricing rumored around $2,000

A Familiar Playbook for Staggered Launches

Even if components are shipping, an announcement and a retail launch are two different things. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in March that the foldable may not ship in September, and Barclays analyst Tim Long predicted shipments could slip to December. Apple has run this play before: the iPhone X was announced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone 8 lineup but didn’t reach customers until November.

The likeliest outcome, if production lags, is that Apple announces the full iPhone 18 lineup together in September and staggers shipments by model. That approach lets Apple control the narrative while buying time on whichever unit needs it. The foldable, potentially launching as the iPhone Ultra, would still get its stage moment even if the actual hardware arrives later.
