Foldable iPhone Clears Hinge Testing, September Launch Still On Track — iPhone

What You Need to Know

  • Apple’s foldable iPhone entered trial production with September launch timeline still on track.
  • Hinge durability issues have been largely resolved after extensive testing and redesign work.
  • Samsung Display supplies foldable OLED panels; Shinjuxing and Amphenol provide hinge modules.
  • Apple may announce foldable Ultra separately from standard iPhone models in September event.

Apple’s foldable iPhone has cleared one of its most stubborn engineering hurdles, and the timeline for a September launch appears to be holding. Supply chain reports indicate the device has moved into trial production, the stage where assembly processes and component integration get verified before full-scale manufacturing begins. Foxconn is handling initial production, with mass production scheduled to start at the end of July.

The hinge was the sticking point. After millions of durability cycles during testing, the mechanism generated noise and showed tolerance issues that pushed defect rates higher than expected. A Taiwan supply chain insider described the situation plainly: “Currently, most of these issues have been resolved.” That resolution is what allowed the foldable to advance past the development phase.

The supplier picture is now clearer too. Samsung Display is providing the foldable OLED panels and has reportedly completed preparations for volume production. The hinge modules themselves come from two sources:

  • Taiwan-based Shinjuxing supplies 3D-printed hinge components
  • American supplier Amphenol also provides hinge modules
  • Samsung Display handles the foldable OLED panels

A Different Kind of iPhone Launch

The more interesting detail in these reports is not the production schedule but the potential restructuring of Apple’s September event itself. Sources suggest Apple may focus the fall announcement on the Pro, Pro Max, and foldable Ultra models, with standard iPhone models arriving separately at a later date. That would represent a meaningful departure from Apple’s usual practice of announcing the full lineup at once.

The thermal engineering built into the foldable has received less attention than the hinge drama, even though managing heat inside a folded form factor is a genuinely difficult constraint. And for buyers weighing the likely price premium, the expected specs of the foldable iPhone Ultra will matter as much as the launch date. Earlier concerns that hinge problems could push the device into late 2026 or beyond now appear, at least according to current supply chain signals, to be off the table.
