Instagram has quietly handed users something they have been asking for since the grid format existed: the ability to reorder photos on their profile without deleting them. Likes, comments, and original post dates stay intact. Only the visual position changes.

The mechanic is straightforward. Press and hold any post on your profile, select “Reorder grid,” then drag posts into whatever arrangement you want. Pinned posts remain locked at the top, and changes go live immediately once saved.

The real story here is not the feature itself but what it signals about how Instagram thinks about profiles now. For most of its history, the grid was a passive archive, a reverse-chronological record of what you posted. Letting users curate it turns the profile page into something closer to a portfolio, which is exactly how creators and brands have always wanted to use it.

What This Changes for Creators

That shift matters because Instagram has spent the last two years chasing TikTok’s interest-graph model, where the feed is driven by content performance rather than who you follow. The feature also arrives while Instagram is still absorbing the fallout from removing end-to-end encrypted DMs in the European Union earlier this year, a decision that drew sharp criticism from privacy advocates.
