IPhone 11 Gets Seven Years of Software Support, Matching Google's Pixel Promise — iPhone

What You Need to Know

  • IPhone 11 launched in 2019 will receive seven major iOS updates through at least 2026.
  • Apple supports older iPhones longer than Google’s guaranteed seven-year Android update policy for Pixel devices.
  • A13 Bionic chip in iPhone 11 is oldest processor supported by iOS 27, limiting some features.
  • IPhone SE 2nd generation also receives same six-year support window as 2019 flagship iPhone models.

The story here is not that iOS 27 supports the iPhone 11. It’s that Apple’s support window for a 2019 phone now stretches to at least 2026, making it one of the longer software lifespans in consumer electronics.

The iPhone 11 launched with iOS 13. If iOS 27 ships this fall as expected, that phone will have received seven major software updates across roughly seven years. For comparison, Google guarantees seven years of Android updates for its Pixel 9 line from launch, a policy announced in 2023 partly to close the gap with Apple. Apple never publishes a formal support window, which means every year the iPhone 11 survives feels like a surprise even when the pattern is consistent.

The pre-WWDC rumors about dropping the iPhone 11 were not baseless. The A13 Bionic chip inside it is the oldest processor in the iOS 27 compatibility list, and certain Apple Intelligence features from iOS 18 already required A17 Pro or M-series chips. Apple has been quietly tiering its own software by hardware capability for two years now.

What the List Actually Shows

iOS 27 runs on a wide range of hardware, from the iPhone SE (2nd generation) to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but owning a supported device and getting the full feature set are different things. Older phones will likely run iOS 27 with a subset of capabilities, particularly anything tied to on-device machine learning.

The iPhone SE 2nd generation is the quieter inclusion here. That model also uses the A13 chip and launched in 2020, giving Apple’s budget line the same longevity as its flagship from the same era. Owners who bought the SE specifically for its lower price are now six years into a supported device.

Apple’s compatibility decisions carry real financial weight for users deciding whether to upgrade. Keeping the iPhone 11 on the list removes one of the cleaner arguments for buying new hardware this fall.
