IPhone 18 Base Model Gets 9GB RAM, Still Below Pro’s Apple Intelligence Standard

The base iPhone 18 may arrive with less RAM than expected, and that gap could determine which AI features most buyers actually get to use. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple plans to equip lower-end iPhone 18 models, likely including a standard iPhone 18 and an iPhone 18e, with 9GB of RAM rather than the 12GB previously rumored. Those devices are expected around March or April 2027.

The memory configuration Kuo describes uses six 1.5GB dies, totaling 9GB, compared to the four 2GB dies found in current lower-end iPhone 17 models. That is a modest step up, not a leap. The iPhone 17’s base 8GB is already enough to disqualify it from some iOS 27 capabilities, a pattern that has been tightening with each generation.

Apple May Set a New RAM Floor

The more telling detail is what Apple is reportedly reserving for the Pro lineup. The iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and foldable iPhone are rumored to carry 12GB of RAM and launch in fall 2026, months before the base models ship. Apple has used that kind of hardware segmentation before to keep Apple Intelligence features tiered across its lineup without making the exclusions look deliberate.

iOS 27 is expected to bring deeper system-level integration with Apple Intelligence, which generally means higher memory requirements for the most demanding features. Whether 9GB clears that bar depends entirely on Apple’s final feature list, which remains unannounced. Buyers of the base iPhone 18 will essentially be trusting that the 1GB upgrade is enough to keep them on the right side of whatever cutoff Apple draws.

The situation rhymes with how Apple Intelligence rolled out on earlier devices, where hardware minimums quietly excluded recent phones from headline features. Nine gigabytes is better than eight, but the number only matters relative to a threshold Apple has not yet disclosed.
