The meeting produced two concrete outcomes: Mike Rockwell, who led the Vision Pro hardware effort, took over Siri, and software chief Craig Federighi expanded his role over AI strategy broadly.
The personnel moves matter because they signal where Apple placed the blame. Rockwell’s background is in hardware and systems integration, not language models, which suggests Apple believes its AI problem is at least partly an execution and product-coherence problem rather than a pure research deficit.
What Apple Is Promising Next
WWDC 2026 is where Apple plans to show whether any of this worked. The expected announcements include a more conversational Siri and a standalone assistant app built to compete directly with modern AI chatbots, arriving alongside iOS 27 and macOS 27.
The timing sits awkwardly against Apple’s competitive position. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has had a standalone app on iOS since 2023, and Google’s Gemini is embedded across Android at a level Siri has never matched on Apple’s own platform. Apple is arriving late to a category it arguably invented the consumer appetite for with the original Siri launch in 2011.
Tim Cook is also, by most accounts, in the later years of his tenure. WWDC 2026 will function as something close to an AI report card, one that reflects decisions made under his watch and sets the trajectory for whoever leads Apple next.
