VisionOS 27 Adds Iceland’s Thórsmörk as Immersive Backdrop

What You Need to Know
- Apple added Thórsmörk, an Icelandic nature reserve, as immersive environment to visionOS 27.
- Environment features high-resolution 3D terrain, moss, sky, and location-matched ambient audio for wraparound backdrop.
- VisionOS 27 releases publicly this fall as free update for all Vision Pro owners.
- Apple has not disclosed Vision Pro sales figures since the headset’s launch.
Apple added a new immersive environment to visionOS 27, and it is a real place: Thórsmörk, a nature reserve in southern Iceland, captured in high-resolution 3D with ambient audio. The addition was announced at WWDC 2026 last week, where Apple used the conference to fill out the Vision Pro experience with polish rather than platform-level changes.
That framing is the more telling part. Apple has not disclosed Vision Pro sales figures since launch, and the visionOS 27 keynote gave the headset relatively little stage time. A new backdrop is a low-cost addition that makes existing owners feel seen without requiring Apple to commit to anything structural.
The environment itself renders rocky terrain, green moss, and an overcast Icelandic sky as a wraparound backdrop for app windows. Users can look in any direction and hear location-matched audio, which is consistent with how Apple has built out previous immersive photo environments since the headset launched.
Developer Beta Access
Access right now requires enrolling in the developer beta program and installing visionOS 27 beta 1. The public release arrives this fall as a free update for all Vision Pro owners.
One thread worth tracking: Apple is reportedly exploring deeper Vision Pro ecosystem integration across its product line, including context-aware features that would tie the headset to other devices. A serene Icelandic valley is a fine addition, but the headset’s long-term case rests on whether Apple builds workflows around it, not backdrops for it.
